What are common misconceptions about breathwork?

Some common misconceptions about breathwork are:

  • That you need to be feeling stressed or overwhelmed to utilize a breathwork exercise or pranayama technique — You can incorporate breathing exercises as long as an hour and as short as 5 minutes into your everyday life.
  • That pranayama has to be practiced in conjunction with the physical yoga asana practice — You can practice pranayama on its own, although learning the physical side of yoga often helps prepare the body to sit and breathe/meditate.
  • That deep breathing is the “healthiest” way to breathe — There are actually breathing exercises, such as kapalabhati where the goal is to breathe short, quick breaths in order to energize the body and clear the mind.
  • That learning breathwork techniques is an instant fix to calm oneself — Breathwork and Pranayama are just like any other practice; They are simply that, a practice. While we like to think being able to call on our breath to help us calm down is a quick & easy fix, it actually takes a while to build a strong breathing practice in order for nervous system regulation. The more you practice it, the more effective it can be throughout everyday life.

  2. Find communities to practice with like-minded individuals such as a nearby yoga studio.
